The Connecticut Youth Leadership Forum offers a valuable opportunity for young people with disabilities to develop leadership abilities, build confidence, and connect with peers across the state. Held on a college campus, the forum introduces participants to the kinds of academic and social experiences they may encounter in higher education. Through workshops, team-building activities, and mentoring relationships, attendees are encouraged to recognize their strengths and practice skills that support self-advocacy. The overall aim is to empower youth to take active roles in shaping their own futures, both during the event and in the broader contexts of school, work, and community life. Preparing a strong application can make a meaningful difference for students interested in attending the forum. Applicants are typically asked to share information about their interests, goals, and experiences, as well as why they would like to participate. Reviewing the materials carefully and reflecting on personal strengths helps young people present themselves thoughtfully. Families and educators can also play a supportive role by encouraging applicants to express their ideas in their own words. Submitting materials before the deadline allows time to address any questions and ensures that applications receive full consideration. Participation in the forum often extends well beyond the event itself, as alumni frequently stay engaged with statewide networks focused on youth leadership, transition planning, and disability advocacy. Many former attendees go on to mentor newer participants, contribute to advisory councils, and speak publicly about issues that matter to them. The experience can help young people articulate their goals for postsecondary education, employment, and independent living. By fostering long-term connections among participants, the forum contributes to a broader community of young leaders who continue to learn from one another and support each other’s growth.

Youth leadership forums represent one of the many pathways through which the Bureau and its partners encourage young people to develop voice, self-advocacy skills, and civic engagement. Such programs bring together students with disabilities for immersive experiences that build confidence, peer networks, and practical tools for life after high school. Participation in these forums often marks an important step in a young person's journey toward greater independence and community involvement.

The Connecticut Bureau of Special Education plays a central role in supporting students with disabilities and the educators who serve them. Through bulletins, professional learning opportunities, and collaborative partnerships, the Bureau helps families and schools navigate special education with greater confidence. Its communications highlight resources that strengthen inclusive practice, transition planning, and student-centered decision making across the state.
